Synopsis
An elderly couple are living out their twilight years in a peaceful Uzbek village, until their two adult sons begin replacing obsolete items in the house, and repeatedly pester them to tear the place down and rebuild it, as the younger son, who works overseas, plans to live there after he is married. Kholikov beautifully illustrates his minimalist tale with the couple’s increasing unease and befuddlement with the harbingers of change and progress: smartphones, flatscreen televisions and ATM cards, that disrupt the carefully regimented and harmonious existence they have enjoyed for decades.
