Synopsis
During a blistering hot summer in Budapest, 18-year-old Abel flunks his final history exam after accidentally wearing a nationalist ribbon on his jacket. Did he fail because his progressive teacher Jakab objected to the pin, or because the lovesick teen froze up? Reisz’s sharply observed comingof- age tale laments Hungary’s politically divisive landscape, where – as is dishearteningly true in so many countries today – young people become pawns in an incendiary and irresolvable standoff, in which citizens are polarised as either patriots or traitors.
