Synopsis
The last film that Tanaka directed is a tragic love story about femininity and humanism. Set against the turbulent backdrop of late 16th century politics, the tale focuses on a tea master’s daughter, who struggles to stay true to her unrequited love for a married Christian in exile, and finds honour in death. The emotional restraint of Ozu, the exquisite beauty of Mizoguchi, and the profound realism of Naruse meld together to form Tanaka’s own brand of cinematic artistry, and her ultimate expression of personal belief.
