Synopsis
"Setting a milestone for science-fiction in contemporary Chinese cinema, Huang Jianxin used his cyberpunk film as an allegorical tale to satirise the workings of bureaucracy. An engineer creates an android double to stand in for him at boring meetings, but becomes entangled in a power struggle when the robot develops a mind of its own. The Fifth Generation director masterfully employs modernist visuals – red filters and harsh, angular set design – to convey his character’s anxiety and the emptiness of modern living, which resonates more loudly today, with the proliferation of Artificial Intelligence.
