Synopsis
After making his 1928 film The Fall of the House of Usher, director Jean Epstein questioned how the unreal could convey feelings of the real. Now Nicolas Klotz and Elisabeth Perceval examine how far we’ve come. Shooting on the French isle of Ushant, where Epstein started afresh and made Finis Terræ with locals, the pair consider cinema’s origins, films becoming ‘high-frequency trading pictures’, and the assault of algorithms and images. Klotz and Perceval’s sparse, experimental work prompts thought on new beginnings in troubled times.
