"Against the backdrop of bombed out houses and city streets strewn across the length and breadth of Ukraine, Karpovych shares with her audience snippets of phone conversations between invading Russian soldiers and their families at home. From the content of these calls, intercepted by the Ukrainian authorities, we gain insight into how the invasion is being justified to the Russian public, the atrocities carried out by their military, and the slowly-encroaching realisation that they have been lied to, in between moribund confessions of looting and envy at Ukraine’s relatively luxurious society.
