Synopsis
McDonagh’s first feature follows a pair of Irish hitmen as they retreat to Bruges to await further instructions, following a botched job. Unimpressed
by its historical beauty, Ray moans incessantly, while his older colleague Ken attempts to soak up the picturesque seasonal ambience, that is until
he receives new orders from their foul-mouthed benefactor. Brimming with violence, hilarious dialogue and escalating absurdity, In Bruges showcases McDonagh's signature talent for transforming the profane into the truly poetic. Screening with Six Shooter (2004, 27min)./ Martin McDonagh comes out swinging, with a cinematic debut of unflinching honesty and razor sharp humour. Taking the train home from the hospital where his wife has just succumbed to cancer, Donnelly (Gleeson) finds himself sat across from a relentlessly loquacious and confrontational youth (Conroy), who proceeds to antagonise his fellow passengers. What unspools is a deeply uncomfortable and unapologetically funny thriller that would prove the perfect calling card for its director, winning an Academy Award and launching his widely celebrated career. Screening with In Bruges (2008, 107min).
