Synopsis
Fruit Chan shifted to documentary filmmaking with this portrait of beloved writer Xi Xi, who famously wrote about Hong Kong in her 1979 serial My City. Through interaction with the writer, readings of her work, and discussions with renowned critics and writers, Chan traces Xi Xi’s life and career, juxtaposing her canon against the backdrop of Hong Kong’s changes and showing how the city’s unique identity is so intertwined with her work. Chan also inserts whimsical interludes into the film featuring her characters, sometimes challenging the form of documentary filmmaking, while demonstrating the playful, maverick spirit that has become his signature.
