Synopsis
A filmmaker who excels in finding magical moments in the mundane, director Ogigami Naoko (Glasses, 32nd) takes on mortality and the Great Beyond in this transcendent comedy-drama. Moving to a rural town to restart his life, Takeshi meets Kozo, a “minimalist” neighbour who takes the phrase “sharing is caring” too literally with Minami, his single-mother landlord, and Kenichi, a tombstone salesman. Despite its grim subject matter, the film finds rays of hope in moments of everyday joy (such as a steaming bowl of rice and a great side dish) and its sublime depiction of life as an ever-flowing river.
